Compliments of Cupcakes and Cashmere
I really want to pick up photography again - and this holiday inspiration got me in the mood to experiment. WANT.
Dear UF PRSSA: The jig is up. As someone who has served in three executive board positions, two committees and two Alpha PRoductions accounts, it’s uncomfortable to think about life without PRSSA. It has defined my college career, led me to lifelong friends and guided me to the next chapter of my life. And I’m not alone. I’ve spent countless night alongside PRSSA peers in Weimer Hall — repainting the Student Activities Office, perfecting our Vis. Comm. projects, or just barely meeting another Reporting deadline. Hours of mind numbing National Conference meetings, which led to unexpected, but unforgettable, nights at Epcot. The rainy march to a “Solar Village” in Madrid, where we worked around the clock to bring home the Solar Decathlon Europe trophy for Communications and Social Awareness. The fact is, UF PRSSA is backed by the most balanced public relations program in the nation and boasts top-notch faculty, including our chapter’s professional adviser, Deanna Pelfrey, APR, PRSA Fellow, who dedicates many sleepless nights to the continued improvement of our chapter. It’s up to each one of us to take advantage of the opportunities presented here. I encourage you to get involved through a committee, Alpha PRoductions or National Conference planning. Leave your mark. In the midst of pre-graduation mayhem, I recently heard a bud of advice that inspired me to keep moving. During a National Conference committee meeting in Orlando, we met Bill Warren. Following a distinguished communications career in Central Florida, Warren has settled in at what he calls his “dream job,” managing land and utilities for all of Walt Disney World’s extensive properties. The committee described to him a new professional development workshop for National Conference, called “Personal Branding.” It would help students develop their own visual identity to set them apart and make them memorable - a rising trend visible in job and internship hunts. After listening to our pitch, Warren smirked and said, “I haven’t had to apply for a job throughout my entire career. And it wasn’t because of any of that stuff.” In fact, his reputation as an honest, forward-thinking professional had moved him up the industry ladder in a seemingly random slew of newspaper jobs, until he landed an executive position at Walt Disney World. It didn’t happen because he spewed out witty tweets by the hour, or because he found a clever way to make his initials into a logo. I happened because he practiced his art honestly. His positive reputation resulted in a seamless career in the industry he loved. As you prepare to replace overpriced textbooks with overpriced briefcases, I hope you will go on to practice your craft in the sprit that Bill did. Oh, and have some fun, too. Go Gators!
